Turning 40

It didn’t hurt as much as I anticipated. A long time ago, I told myself I would be published before I hit thirty. I missed that mark, but at least I snuck in before 4-0 hit.

Aging is very strange. Little things sneak up on you. One day you have a few gray hairs, and then suddenly they’re taking over. Or taking your kid to the park. I remember the days when I could run and jump without hurting yourself. Now I just shamble along behind him. At least I’m still (mostly) of sound mind.

Tina, I am officially inspired. Thanks!

You will find that being in your 40s is a great place to be. If you haven’t done that, been there, seen it, it just doesn’t matter anymore. You’re wiser, and you’ll find you have more energy than you ever did. It’s also the decade where you discover what matters most: family, friends, your work and the Earth you live in. Explore it well (I recommend a tent, camping gear, an SUV to pack in the family, a good GPS and at least a three week span of time. The USA has so many unique nick and crannies to fill a life time. Save Europe for your 50s after your fortune is made.) Although most men and women find their fortune during that decade, if you don’t you’ll realize it just doesn’t matter.

Thanks, folks. 40’s not so bad when surrounded by such fine people.

  4. I always say that life gets better each year, so here’s to another great year for you, Jon!

    Happy Birthday.

Seeing as I’m just turning 30 in December, I guess I’ve missed that `being published by 30` deadline too…oops…let’s hope it happens for me before I turn 40 too.

    Congratualtions by the way…x

I totally am with you on the running thing. What gets me the most is the achy joints, especially in the morning. That’s kind of new for me in the past year or two (I hit 40 this year, as well), and most unwelcome.

Congrats on making it to the publishing scene! I’ve got several publications under my belt, but still looking to get that novel deal.

  7. Neth says:

    Congrats (I suppose).

I’m not 40 yet, but I feel your pain. It was just the other day that I was thinking ‘when did classic rock stations start playing music from when I was in high school?’
